The Joy of Children

On Sunday I had the joy of doing my first child dedication. I really to love these ceremonial moments. Some time ago the church I grew up at gave me their standard child dedication service which I modified some. Below is the service given on Sunday;

Introduction

Welcome to this time of thanksgiving recognizing the birth of children. At this point in our worship service, we give particular thanks to God for His gift of children to our homes and to our church. The parents of Kianna Abigail Xxxx have declared their desire to publicly present their firstborn daughter in the presence of His people, to dedicate themselves to her Christian nurture, and to invite your partnership with them in this high privilege and responsibility.

We, therefore, give to God our thanks for the marvellous and beautiful gift of life as found in Kianna. While relying upon God’s promises and working with Him, we will seek, both as parents and as a church, to bring this child up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. In turn, we will pray God’s fatherly care and abundant blessing upon her as she continues to grow.

The Word of God

Let us now hear the Word of God and the counsel it offers for parenting:

Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
And with all your soul, and with all your might.
Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart.
Recite them to your children and talk about them
when you are at home and when you are away,
when you lie down and when you rise.
Bind them as a sign on your hand,
fix them as an emblem on your forehead,
and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

-Deuteronomy 6:4-9, NRSV

Parents’ Pledges
Matt and Latitia

Do you recognize with gratitude the goodness of God who has brought to you the gift of this child and do you wish to present your child to God in recognition of the high privilege and unique responsibility that God has granted to you?

Response: We do.

In presenting your child to the Lord, do you promise, in dependence upon God’s grace and with the help of the church, to teach the claims of our faith, and by prayer, word, and example raise her in the nurture and love of the Lord?

Response: We do.

Do you sincerely desire the prayers and support of this church that you may be strengthened in your purpose to train your child in the nurture and love of the Lord?

Response: We do.

Congregational Covenant:

Brothers and sisters of the household of faith, this family is your family. Your love and example are crucial to this child’s growth in the Lord. Will you pray for her and her parents, will you support them by your faith and do all in your power to make this church a real home in Christ for all of them? If so, I ask you to state your declaration of intention by saying: “We do.”

Blessing of the Child:

Kianna Abigail Xxxx

Shakespeare asked the question, what is in a name?

In times past, one’s name told a story. It may have told a story of the past or the hopes for the future. Kianna’s name tells a beautiful story. Kianna means living with grace, and Abigail means father’s joy. A wonderful reminder to us all that we all require the grace of God, and that God loves his children greatly.

Blessing:

The Lord bless you and keep you;
the lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you.
The Lord lift up the light of His countenance upon you,
and give you peace.

Prayer of Dedication

Let Us Pray

Loving Father, our God and our Saviour, we thank You for the gift of life You have given to each of us, but especially we praise You for this child whom You have given to be a part of this family.

Give to these parents Your special graces of insight and love, that under their guidance their child may grow in wisdom and stature and in favour with You and all people.

Grant that we your people may truly be a household of faith to this child, providing her with food for the spirit to nourish her through the years of growth in to maturity.

With gratitude to You for this child we dedicate her parents, and ourselves, to the end that all our lives may be a blessing to You and a service to humanity. This we pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN.
